One of the many reasons we love road riding in our little patch of paradise is that we get lots of opportunities to climb. We like to share those opportunities with others. This is just v1 of our Flatlander's Lament routes. We'll be adding others. And what kind of laments do we hear from visiting flatlanders? “I wish I could climb more/better/faster/without puking.” “Oh, if only I'd had the grilled veggies instead of the loaded baked potato last night.” “Why did they build this road right up the side of this mountain?” Hint: there are no mountains in Indiana. It just feels like there are while you're pedaling.

Flatlander's Lament v1 elevation profile.
Irwin Hill is the first descent on the route.
This is the approach to Irwin Hill, the first descent of the ride. At this point the first climb, which is Dugan Hollow, is behind you.
Use caution to avoid spooking horses.
Never assume horses are okay around bicycles. To keep from spooking them, pull over and stop, take off your helmet and sunglasses, and talk to the drivers or riders as they approach. And yes, you'll often see horses on our routes, either saddles horses with riders or draft horses such as these.
Flat sections afford recovery time.
The route isn't all hills. There are some flat sections where you can catch your breath.

You'll appreciate each breath-catching break when you tackle the next climb.
