Destinations In and Around Madison, Indiana
Midwest
Rich Ries grew up in the Twin Cities and, like most kids in the `50s and `60s, he rode his bike everywhere. “We didn't differentiate between one type of riding and another,” he said. “Going to a friend's house meant riding sandy trails, fire roads and gravel roads, long paved climbs, and often through someone's back yard. It wasn't mountain biking, despite the roots and rocks. It wasn't road riding, despite the pavement. It was just riding, and we loved it all.” Now, nearly a half-century later, he still loves it all. “I've ridden all over and have had great experiences in other parts of the country,” Rich said. “But I'm a Midwestern boy at heart. This feels like home to me.” Think of these rides, then, as a home tour of sorts.
Southeastern U.S.
People are stunned when we rave about the trails in Southeast, such as Oak Mountain, Cheaha, Chilhowee, Tanasi, and Pinhoti. We tell them that if they come to the Southeast and ride only Tsali, Pisgah, or Dupont State Forest, they're missing some of the best trails. Granted, our objective is different. Rich Ries does a lot of client work in this part of the country and he's usually trying to plug some mountain bike rides into a business trip. So our destinations and Rich's available time for riding are often dictated by his primary reason for being in the area. He tends to ride smaller trail systems located close to urban areas or near highways connecting urban areas. Even so, these trails are worth a visit regardless of why you're here.
