Location: Madison-Lexington-New Washington-Hanover
Miles: 50-56
Reporting: Byron Nagel

Attendees: Dan Baughman, Rick Lostutter, Byron Nagel, Bud Reed, and David Stucker.
Summary: A great day for everyone but maybe a little less great for Bud.
I hadn't heard from anyone and didn't know who might show, but at 1:00 Dan and David showed, Bud at 1:05 and Rick at 1:15. Rick said he really pushed the speed limit so if there would happen to be any policemen reading this ride review and clocked him a little fast, he appreciates your gun tolerances!
This was the first moderate-distance ride for the season and as is the case on early season rides, we looked fantastic at the start and rather haggard at the finish. It was a great day to ride with the clouds and rain finally breaking for a spell to let us enjoy the sun.
Bud said he had pumped his tires before he left, but the rear looked really low, and the low profile and soft tire was confirmed with the 30 psi showing on my tire pump gauge. I inflated the tire to 100 psi and the front tire was pumped from about 45 to 95. Things didn't get much better for Bud as the low rear tire was indication of future problems.
We all made it out to Lexington except Buddy. Dan had not had lunch and was hungry and he and Rick stayed while David and I backtracked and found Bud at the top of the hill that is the last big descent before going into Lexington. Bud had his tire off and the new tube in, but was having trouble inflating it. I got my Blackburn pump but couldn't get it to inflate. After several attempts (thinking I didn't get the inside of the pump head switched from presta to Shrader correctly), I got my CO2 out. Still no success. I thought I heard a hissing sound, so after dismantling the tire, it was Bud's spare tube hissing.
By the time I had all this figured out, Rick and Dan showed up. Rick loaned Bud a tube. I noticed the rim tape was misaligned in a couple of places, exposing the tube to a number of spoke holes. I am pretty sure this was the culprit of his tube's demise. I realigned the rim tape, re-inflated and off we went to New Washington.
Unfortunately Bud was running low on calories and bonked on the way to New Washington. By this time, it was getting late - later than I realized. Dan and David rode on, while the others of us took a 45-minute break. Rick offered Bud to have his wife pick him up, but Bud was determined to make it back. We left Bud with another tube in case he had problems. Rick and I sped on and were thankful for the mostly tailwind that kept us in the 18-23 mph range. Rick departed at Hanover, not to miss supper with his family, and I think we both made it back by 6. I called David and he said he and Dan made it back between 5:30-6. I called David later and he had stopped to visit Tom Pritchard who is home from his surgery. He is doing very well, but both he and Karen are quite worn out.
At 7 pm was a knock at my basement door and there was Bud. He said he did recoup and had a decent ride back in. Great job Bud! Great guys to ride with and a great day to be out on the bike.
