We'll post info relating to the trails at Versailles as we receive it from project supervisor Guy Schwering. Here's the latest:
Everything worked out as planned, and then some, for the April 27 Hoosier Mountain Bike Association party/ride at Versailles State Park to celebrate the new Grandview Trail completion. About 25 area mountain bikers and their families attended the gala affair.
We started out with the social hour where people from Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky got to know each other and talk about all the great trails being built in the area, including a possible large addition to the Versailles trail system.
Then we got on our bikes and enjoyed the perfect trail conditions and abundant wildflower show that Mother Nature was putting on that cool spring day.
The faster group did 18 miles, running what is becoming called the Big Outer Loop (a combination of the hilltop portion of Creekside, Center, and Grandview loop) both directions. Thanks to Jeff Binzen for putting that run together. Everybody agrees that the trails flow very well in either direction and have enough variety to keep things interesting. The more laid back group finished with around 10 miles, one flat tire and one minor wipeout. I was driving everybody nuts, popping out from behind trees and taking pictures of all the fun.
We finished the day with a meal that couldn't be beat, with many thoughtful, home cooked dishes also brought in from the group. Thanks to everybody that helped pitch in, and especially to my wife, Maria, who always comes through when I tell her casually that she is in charge of feeding 25 people the next weekend! (I did bring the tulip bouquet that I stole from her flower bed).
All in all, a really pleasurably way to spend the day and acknowledge the many hours of time and effort given so unselfishly by all the volunteers who built the fine Grandview Trail.
Thanks also to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Versailles State Park Property Manager Ted Tapp for the opportunity and support of HMBA, and to the local mountain biking community in this trail system project. I hope that the State is as pleased with the quality of the trails at VSP as I am, and I look forward to many years of harmonious and mutually beneficial relationship.

At the start of the ride.
From left: Byron Nagel, John Bennett, John's son, Dylan.
Mark asked Byron to set up for a picture. The pressure got to him and Byron bungled the approach. No damage to Byron, his bike, or the trees.
John and Dylan at the same spot. Byron absorbed all the bad juju from the area so these guys made it through safely.
