Reporting: Rich Ries.
Photos: Rich Ries.
Good: Good workout; rideable in all but the wettest conditions; can be linked with Springs Valley for an epic ride; Lick Creek trail is a 10-minute drive away. (Lick Creek is not recommended for riding in wet or winter conditions, however.)
Bad: Can have lots of horsies; typical wide, gravelly HNF trail.
Other Nearby Attractions: Paoli Peaks has skiing and snowboarding; French Lick Springs and West Baden Springs Resorts offer golf, horseback riding, and casino gambling. Both resorts are worth the trip just to see them, and don't miss the atrium at West Baden.
Comments: The elevation profile is for riding Young's Creek clockwise, which I did out of habit. I've been riding here since the late `80s and that always seemed like the preferred direction to me. But since the Forest Service has done some work on the trail, I'm not sure that's true any longer.
The elevation profile also assumes you've started at the north (CR 50W) parking area. That location has lots of room, vault toilets, and a picnic shelter. But it can get crowded with horse folks on nice days. To avoid the congestion you may want to use the small parking area on the north side of CR 550S.
Don't forget that the Hoosier National Forest requires a trail permit for horseback riders and mountain bikers. Daily and annual permits are available.
